The average U.S. household uses 877 kWh of energy a month so everyone have to Energy Conscious. That’s over 10,000 kWh per year!
The good news is that there are various things that you can do to bring down the numbers. Not only will it save you money, but it’ll also benefit the environment.
Interested? Want to know how you can be more energy conscious at home? If so, you’re at the right place! We’ll be going over a few tips below.
Find out what they are by reading the rest of the post!
Table of Contents
1. Replace Incandescent Bulbs:
Incandescent bulbs aren’t very efficient. More than 90% of the energy is wasted as heat instead of light. Not only that, but they also have the shortest life expectancy (most are rated up to 1,500 hours) out of all lighting products.
Given that, it’s best to switch to LEDs—they’re one of the most energy-efficient technologies available. Compared to incandescent bulbs, they use 85% less electricity.
They also last much longer with a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours—that’s easily 10 years depending on how you use them!
2. Change the Way You Do Laundry :
Opt for cold water when you can. Save the high-temperature settings for heavily soiled items such as sheets, towels, or dirty diapers. Not only will that cut your energy use in half, but it can also help the detergent work better.
Also, make a habit of washing full loads; the washer will use the same amount of energy no matter how many things you put in so you might as well make the most of it.
And if you can, avoid the dryer—it’s one of the biggest electricity hogs in the home. Consider air-drying your laundry instead. For example, you can hang your clothes outside or on a drying rack.
If you must use the dryer, use the lowest heat setting.
3. Use Solar Power :
For those who want an eco-friendly home, consider installing residential solar panels—they’ll let you harness free and clean energy from the sun.
How do they work? They contain photovoltaic cells that generate electricity by absorbing sunlight; that energy can then be used to create electrical currents. If anything, they’ll drastically reduce your utility bills.
As far as pricing goes, you can expect to spend between $12,000 to $14,000 after federal tax incentives (blueravensolar has more information for those who are interested).
Keep in mind, however, that the investment will quickly pay for itself in energy savings (the average return on investment period is 3-4 years).
Being More Energy Conscious:
There are several things that you can do to be more energy conscious—from switching the lights in your home to installing solar panels. Why not save some money and the planet while you’re at it, right?
