Unplanned pregnancy can create some unexpected feelings of confusion and thoughts; this is normal. Even when a pregnancy isn’t planned, it may still be wanted. 

There are many things that may affect your feelings regarding an unplanned pregnancy. If you’re not sure of your course of action, you’re not alone. While you may know your feelings and what you want from the get-go, you may still find the process difficult. 

It can seem confusing to have such feelings conflicting with each other. For example, some of the things you may be feeling may be as follows:

Anxious as you think about having a baby (or another baby).

Scared because you’ve never been a parent before.

Concerned that your relationship isn’t ready for a baby.

Joy because you’ve always dreamed about having a family. 

Excited to bring a new life into the world.

Even if you have conflicting feelings, it’s important to consider them and process them.

What are your options?

There are 3 options to consider if you have an unplanned pregnancy.

1. Continue your pregnancy and raise your baby.

2. Continue your pregnancy and reach out for adoption or an alternative care situation like extended family or foster family. 

3. Termination, which is also known as abortion. 

It may be helpful to talk to a counselor or someone that you know and trust regarding your feelings. Many people seek out a professional such as a doctor or a counselor, to discuss their emotions and options. Many are concerned about financial and practical issues regarding their options. It may also be helpful to discuss your feelings with someone who has gone through a similar situation. 

How will I make this decision?

Not only will you have to consider your emotions and feelings, but there are also other things that may make the situation more stressful. This can make it even more difficult to decide.

Allow yourself some time to explore your options.

Be good to yourself. You may struggle with your feelings and feel one way one day and another way the next day. That’s okay. 

Learn as much as you can about your options. Seek out support networks as well.

Take good care of yourself emotionally and physically.

It’s important to take some time and really consider all of your options and make the best decision for yourself and your baby.

It’s all up to you on how much of a role you want this person to share with you. Keep in mind that your partner’s role may have a huge impact on your decision. Your relationship may have a heavy influence on your choice. 

You’re the only one that can consent or refuse an abortion. You can’t be forced to have an abortion or to continue your pregnancy. 

If you’re thinking about adoption you’ll want to keep in mind that both you and your partner must consent to an adoption. This may be more challenging if your partner wants to keep the baby.
