What Celebrities Can Teach Us About Plastic Surgery?

When it comes to plastic surgery, everyone has their own needs and wants. Those who haven’t aged as well as they would have liked might desire a few tweaks to look glamorously young, whereas others might crave a more significant medical procedure to look as fit as they feel (take supermodel Chrissy Teigen, who underwent liposuction in 2017).

Still others choose aesthetic surgery for reasons that aren’t necessarily cosmetic; actress Ashley Tisdale, for example, recently underwent a reconstructive rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum, which caused breathing problems and severely affected her quality of life.

Whatever the impetus may be, the vast majority of people who undergo plastic surgery do so in good conscience; deep down, they want to feel more confident inhabiting themselves.

They may even aim to look as good as the celebrities they see on television, though it’s important to keep in mind that even media giants seek outside help to look amazing—it’s just as common for a famous person to get aesthetic surgery as it is for an ordinary person!

Wanting to Change Your Appearance Is Completely Normal

If you think that it’s strange, if not outright taboo, to get cosmetic work, then you’re probably unaware that this attitude is the result of outdated, shame-perpetuating stigmas.

In fact, according to Medical News Today, almost 18 million people underwent surgical and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures in 2018—and that was in the United States alone. Put simply, it is just as common to change your wardrobe as it is to visit a doctor for a quick nip-and-tuck that can mean the difference between self-deprecation and self-adoration.

If nothing else, plastic surgery’s newfound popularity proves that people are slowly waking up to its countless benefits. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look fantastic!

Transparency is Key

Fashion extraordinaire Marc Jacobs has been extremely open about his cosmetic work. He recently documented, on Instagram, his experience with plastic surgery—specifically a facelift—and sparked a wave of support from peers and followers.

Jacobs’ transparency is particularly admirable considering that he is a man, and historically, men have been discouraged from getting aesthetic surgery. Thankfully, though, there are men out there just like Jacobs who are not only working to clear away these stigmas, but who are beginning their own journeys of unconditional self-love.

Do It for Yourself, Not Others

Unfortunately, some people undergo cosmetic work to appease others. This is especially common in Asian countries, where people get double eyelid surgery to look more Western.

No matter how devastating peer pressure can be, though, nobody should ever change the way they look based on outside opinions; such motivations should come from a place of deep personal honesty. This isn’t to say that looking great to others isn’t a plus—nothing feels quite as good as a genuine compliment! —but the point of any cosmetic procedure is to help you look exactly how you want to look.

Even Celebrities Have Insecurities

Too often, we put celebrities, such as Cardi B, Dianna Agron, and Kourtney Kardashian, on a pedestal. These idols project a larger-than-life image not only because of their notoriety, but also because of their nearly perfect appearances: big lips, smooth skin, and high cheekbones.

It is important, though, to remember that these people are still human, and are therefore subject to all the normal complications of aging. Just because they look good on television doesn’t mean that they look put-together all the time; most of them have teams of dedicated makeup specialists to fix their more glaring imperfections.

Realize, too, that even the biggest celebrities have insecurities. This shouldn’t be surprising; in fact, it should teach us that everyone’s life has positive and negative aspects, and that we shouldn’t treat other people like ethereal beings. Everyone, without exception, gets older, but it’s how you deal with this aging that makes all the difference!
